Biography
A PhD student in the Department for the Study of Religion, Bryon completed his BA and MA at the University of Michigan. Originally from Detroit on the US/Canada border, Bryon’s Canadian roots stem from his close ties to the historic Black communities of Southwestern Ontario. His research focuses on the dynamic history of Qur’an interpretation in Africa as a foundation for understanding a centuries-old intellectual and cultural heritage linking communities in Africa and the Americas. As an interdisciplinary researcher of Islam and premodern Africa, Bryon seeks to interpret and facilitate greater access to this rich and pluralistic heritage.
