Congratulations, Professor Newman! Oxford University Press has published her new book, Before the Bible: the Liturgical Body and the Formation of Scriptures in Early Judaism. It promotes a new thesis stressing the open-ended character of scriptures in the Hellenistic-Roman era, offers a unique approach combining traditional philological, literary, and historical analysis with new methods, and callsĀ into question the concept of a single “original text”. Before the Bible builds on area of the author’s established expertise in early Jewish prayer and scriptural interpretation.
